Divisions and Rules
Tournament Rules
Grass volleyball rules are a hybrid of beach and indoor volleyball rules. A summary of the applicable rules is below. For rules specific to R4's, refer to the Adult Divisions section below.
- Setting the first contact is permitted
- Open hand tips are not permitted
- A player must be square to their direction of attack when setting a ball over the net
- A player may touch the ball again after making a block touch, but this counts as two out of their three team touches
- Players must rotate their serving order, but they may play any position on the court during receive, offense, and defense.
Youth Divisions
There are four different 4v4 youth divisions:
- 14u Girls
- 14u Boys
- 16u Girls
- 16u Boys
Adult Divisions
There are two different adults divisions at each tournament. There is an OPEN division (higher level) and REC division (lower level). Teams may choose which division they'd like to enter based on their skill level. The OPEN division has a much larger prize for the winning team.
Reserve 4's Format
Reverse 4's format involves two male athletes and two female athletes per team. Male athletes must attack from behind the 3 meter line, while female athletes may attack from anywhere on the court. A male athlete may block a male athlete on the opposing team, but they may not block a female athlete. This format helps to provide a more fair experience for both male and female athletes!
