This is a key aspect of our training.  The team will have bi-weekly film review sessions to analyze our gameplay and determine area for improvement, and to help each athlete develop a deeper understanding of the game.

Season fees
The fees for the season will be approximately $2400.

This includes tournament registrations, practices, positional reps, film review, insurance, equipment, jerseys, clothing, coach registration and NCCP courses, operating costs, and many other costs.

The team fees do not include Volleyball BC registration for each player, and travel costs for the players and coaches.  The coach travel costs will be split amongst the players and billed later in the season.
Play time
Our goal is to be as transparent as possible about play time for each player!  There are no fairplay rules at 16u.  Technically, a player could be on the bench for the entire season.  We don't do that at Velocity, but we also don't play all athletes an equal amount of time.  Our priority in competitions is to play the at our team's highest level. This is how playtime will work on our 16u team.
  • If an athlete arrives early for 95% of practices and displays a baseline amount of curiosity, focus and effort, they will earn 1 set of gameplay per tournament. This is measured by active engagement with novel drills, lessons, and effective communication throughout all play.
  • If an athlete displays correct positioning and thoughtful problem solving, then they will earn an additional set of gameplay each tournament.
  • All additional play time will be at the discretion of the coaches.  If an athlete is unsure why they aren't receiving additional playtime, they may ask the coaches for some reasoning as long as it is at least 3 days after the tournament.

message from the coach...
I am thrilled to be able to work with this team and am stoked to see our players grow, learn, compete and have fun together both on and off the court! 16u is a great time for players to develop position specialization and learn to uniquely contribute in their role on the team and grow in confidence. It is also an opportunity to wrestle with one's personal limits and discover the consequences of intentionality.

What is intentionality? Intention, intensity, tension, attention all share a root word meaning to stretch or strain. When we are engrossed in a difficult but achievable challenge and straining our focus towards it, we are stretched in our ability to tackle similar tasks. As we accomplish more and more variety of these challenges, our confidence grows. Our confidence can then feed back in to the intensity that we are able to apply to new problems. But it is not random. Intentionality is the thoughtful, measured and evidence-based approach to a novel experience. For me, this kind of problem solving develops the most versatile, confident, creative and enjoyable players to coach and to watch.

How will the Velocity 16u team be different than other 16u club teams? For one, our team culture. By rewarding curiosity and effort over talent, focus and attention to our reps, and teamwork over individual highlight reels, we will create problem solvers with range so that confidence in learning spills back and forth between on and off the court. Additionally, our program for this age group is more comprehensive than others. Bi-weekly film review, dedicated positional reps in addition to 3x team practices per week, with personalized skill tracking (updated bi-weekly) that tracks the top 3 skill development focuses for each player and the specific puzzles needed to be solved, will allow each athlete to progress at a faster rate than most other clubs.

For parents... Club Teams are a significant investment of both time and finances.  If you and your daughter's only goal is to have fun, there are many cheaper and easier ways to do so.  Yes, our club players will have fun, but there is also a much greater expectation from our club players that will push them into difficult situations that they will overcome.  Our goal is to make this a rewarding experience for the athletes.

How do we define a rewarding experience?  If a player matures as an athlete and person, gains a deeper understanding and appreciation of the game of volleyball, increases their self esteem due to accomplishing challenges, and improves their ability to remain steady through the ups and downs of competitive sport, then this will be an season that they are proud of and grateful for.

No athletes (or coaches) are ever perfect, but we must aim to always be extending our limits.  If you share this aim and vision, we hope to see you at tryouts!

-Coach Graham
