message from the coach...

I'm excited for the opportunity to coach the Velocity 16u Boys team this year and build on the success of the team from last season!  This season will involve a lot of fun, a lot of hard work, some difficult moments, and many rewarding moments.  Athletes will grow as players and as people, and establish lasting friendships with their teammates.  The team will have fun by playing the game well and seeing tangible improvements.

Athletes on the team will be expected to be hard workers and coachable players.  Many players feel like they are coachable because they are polite and respectful.  These are important qualities, but they are separate from coachability.  To me, being coachable means prioritizing the direction of the coach above your own ideas are what works and what doesn't work.  In practice, this usually means that an athlete has to suspend their desire to achieve a positive outcome (a successful serve, pass, attack, etc) while they implement the feedback they receive.  Long term, their outcomes will improve, but short term, they must trust the training and process.  Being coachable is not easy, but it is needed in order to allow each athlete to progress quickly.

How will the Velocity 16u team be different than other 16u club teams?  Our program for this age group is much more advanced and comprehensive than others.  Strength and conditioning, individual skill development tracking, film review, and 3x team practices per week, will allow dedicated athletes to progress at a much faster rate.

For parents:  club teams are a significant investment of both time and finances.  If our only goal is to have fun, there are many cheaper and easier ways to do so.  Yes, we want players to have fun, but I would say that we are aiming more for a rewarding experience.  How do we define a rewarding experience?  If a player matures as an athlete and person, gains a deeper understanding and appreciation of the game of volleyball, establishes quality friendships, increases their confidence due to noticeable skill progression and the tournament results that come with it, and improves their ability to handle the ups and downs of competitive sport, then this will be a season that they are proud of and grateful for.  This is what we consider to be a rewarding experience.

No athletes (or coaches) are ever perfect, and we do not expect athletes to be perfect in any way when they join the team, but we must aim to always be improving.  If you share this aim and vision, we hope to see you at tryouts!
