Training Overview

team practices
There will be 3 team practices per week.  The focus will be on skill development, team culture and connections, and game systems.

SCHEDULE:

Monday: 7-9pm
Tuesday: 7-9pm
Friday: 7-9pm

*locations TBA
positional reps
We will hold position specific reps practices approximately every second week.  This gives us a chance to allow each athlete to further develop at their specific position.

Positional training will take place on Mondays before or after the team practice.
film review
This is a key aspect of our training.  The team will have bi-weekly film review sessions to analyze our gameplay and determine area for improvement, and to help each athlete develop a deeper understanding of the game.

Bi-weekly film review is tentatively planned for Fridays before practice.  Each session will be 25-30 minutes.

Additional Season Details

team Gear
Our club team athletes will be wearing head-to-toe Mizuno gear.  This year's gear package includes the following:
  • Custom Jerseys
  • Custom Arm Sleeves
  • Short Sleeve Training Shirts (x2)
  • Long Sleeve Training Shirt
  • Hoodie
  • Joggers
  • Backpack
Season fees
The fees for the season will be approximately $2400.

This includes tournament registrations, practices, positional reps, film review, insurance, equipment, jerseys, clothing, coach registration and NCCP courses, operating costs, and many other costs.

The team fees do not include Volleyball BC registration for each player, and travel costs for the players and coaches.  The coach travel costs will be split amongst the players and billed later in the season.
Play time
Our goal is to be as transparent as possible about play time for each player!  Unlike 14u, there are no fairplay rules at 15u.  Playtime will be based on a variety of factors; here is how it will work for our 15u team.
  • If an athlete arrives early for 90% of practices and displays a baseline amount of focus and hustle, they will earn 1 set of gameplay per tournament.
  • If an athlete displays correct positioning and baseline calls (exact criteria will be outlined before the season), then they will earn an additional set of gameplay each tournament.
  • All additional play time will be at the discretion of the coaches.

message from the coach...

I'm excited for the opportunity to coach the 15u team this year!  15u is a very formative year for club volleyball;  I've seen many athletes who progress significantly through hard work, focus, and proper coaching.  I've also seen many athletes who "have potential" but don't have the proper work ethic, focus, and coaching to progress past that point.  At 15u, we really start to see athletes go down one path or the other.

What does it look like to train hard during the upcoming club season?  I'd consider an athlete a hard worker if:  ...they consistently show up early to practice and are completely ready to go by the time we get on the court  ...they display focus and hustle in 90%+ of the drills that we do ...they dedicate at least 30 minutes per week at home to perfect a certain skill that has been identified by coaches (Ex: working on footwork)  ...they actively work towards the goals set out on their skill progress tracking report (more on this below).

How will the Velocity 15u team be different than other 15u club teams?  Our program for this age group is more advanced and comprehensive than others.  Bi-weekly film review, dedicated positional reps in addition to 3x team practices per week, and personalized skill tracking (updated bi-weekly) that tracks the top 3 skill development focuses for each player and the specific steps/milestones needed to "complete" the skill progression, will allow dedicated athletes to progress at a much faster rate.

For parents:  club teams are a significant investment of both time and finances.  If our only goal is to have fun, there are many cheaper and easier ways to do so.  Yes, we want players to have fun, but I would say that we are aiming more for a rewarding experience.  How do we define a rewarding experience?  If a player matures as an athlete and person, gains a deeper understanding and appreciation of the game of volleyball, increases their self esteem due to noticeable skill progression and the tournament results that come with it, and improves their ability to handle the ups and downs of competitive sport, then this will be a season that they are proud of and grateful for.  This is what we consider to be a rewarding experience.

No athletes (or coaches) are ever perfect, but we must aim to always be improving.  If you share this aim and vision, we hope to see you at tryouts!

-Coach Matthew

what parents and players say about coach Matthew:
"Joining Velocity has changed her life and trajectory as an athlete.  You had confidence in the girls and a plan to get them there, and it worked!  The friends and memories will stay with us forever."
"All of her success would not be possible without you and Velocity.  We can't thank you enough for your instruction, encouragement, and belief in her.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts."
"Both our daughters love you as a coach and really like how you push everyone to their potential and more.  They are learning so much from you! You are so knowledgeable about the sport and the drills at practice are so well designed."
